Getting rid of fleas can take time because the fleas you see on your pet are only a small part of the problem. Around 95% of the flea population is actually in the environment as eggs, larvae and pupae. This means that even after you've treated your pet, new fleas can continue to emerge for several weeks.

Here are some tips for effective flea control;

• The most important step is making sure every dog and cat in the household is on an effective flea preventative. There are a range of options available, including spot-on treatments, chewable tablets, oral tablets and collars, so you can choose the product that best suits your pet and lifestyle. If only one pet is treated, fleas can continue to breed and reinfest your home.
• If you're using a topical (spot-on) flea treatment, follow the manufacturer's bathing recommendations, as frequent bathing or swimming may reduce the effectiveness of some products. If your dog swims regularly, a chewable or tablet flea treatment may be a better option.
• Vacuum carpets, rugs, furniture and skirting boards regularly, paying particular attention to areas where your pet sleeps and rests. Vacuuming helps remove any eggs, larvae and pupae, and flea faeces (the fleas’ main diet). This will then help disrupt the flea life cycle.
• Any bedding that your animal uses should be washed in hot water, then left in the sun to dry and air. This will aid in mechanical removal of environmental life stages of the flea.
• If you're dealing with an established flea infestation, environmental flea sprays or flea bombs can help reduce fleas inside the home. Always follow the product directions carefully and take extra care around aquariums and other pets.
• Outdoor flea sprays can be useful in areas where your dog spends a lot of time, such as kennels, shaded areas and under verandas.

Consistency is the key to successful flea control. Continue using your pet's flea preventative year-round, even after the fleas have disappeared. Stopping treatment too early can allow the flea life cycle to start all over again.
