How to Take You Dog's or Cat's TemperatureUpdated 8 hours ago

Checking your dog or cat’s temperature at home is a simple but valuable skill that can help you detect illness early. Follow these steps to safely take your pet's temperature.

  1. Use a digital rectal thermometer with a flexible tip and quick-read feature.
  2. Lubricate the tip with water-based lubricant.
  3. Have someone gently restrain your dog or cat in a calm, secure space. 
  4. Lift the tail and gently insert the thermometer into the rectum, about 2–3 cm for dogs and 1–2 cm for cats.
  5. Wait for the beep, remove the thermometer, note the temperature, and clean the thermometer.

Normal temperature ranges: 
Dogs: 37.5°C–39.2°C
Cats: 38°C–39.2°C

Contact your veterinarian if your pet’s temperature is outside the normal range, or if they show other signs of illness such as lethargy, loss of appetite, breathing changes, vomiting, diarrhoea, or signs of pain.
